Neil Richard Gaiman was born on November 10, 1960, in Portchester, England. He originated from a family of Eastern European Jewish descent. His father, David Bernard Gaiman, worked at their family chain of stores, while his mother, Sheila Gaiman, was a pharmacist. In 1965 the family moved to East Grinstead, West Sussex, where Neil grew up with a profound love for reading, beginning as early as age 4.&nbsp;
Some of his favorite childhood books include J. R. R. Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings, C. S. Lewis’s The Chronicles of Narnia, Lewis Carroll’s Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland, Batman, and other comics. Gaiman received early education at various church schools, including Fonthill School in East Grinstead, Ardingly College, and Whitgift School in Croydon.
When Gaiman began to outgrow comic books in his teenage years, he realized the lack of comic books for an older mature audience. He, therefore, decided to fill the gap himself. Although he wanted to write comic books, Gaiman had little idea how to go about it. Following his graduation from high school in 1977, Gaiman became a journalist writing articles for a number of renowned publications such as the Sunday Times, the Observer, Knave, and Time Out.&nbsp;
In March 1985, Gaiman married McGrath after the birth of their son Michael in 1983. The couple had two more children, Holly and Madeleine. In 1984, Gaiman wrote his first book, a biography of the band Duran Duran. He continued writing articles and interviews in magazines under pseudonyms. However, in 1987, Gaiman waved goodbye to journalism, stating, “British newspapers can make up anything they want and publish it as fact.”&nbsp;
Also, in the late 1980s, Gaiman published Don’t Panic: The Official Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy Companion. Gaiman started writing comic books, continuing the series of Marvelman after its original creator and Gaiman’s friend Alan Moore abandoned it. After his impressive work on Marvelman, Gaiman was offered to write the limited series of Black Orchard and also to re-write an old character, The Sandman. Kenneth Saul Rogoff (born March 22, 1953) is an American economist and chess Grandmaster. He is the Thomas D. Cabot Professor of Public Policy and professor of economics at Harvard University. Rogoff grew up in Rochester, New York. His father was a professor of radiology at the University of Rochester. Rogoff received a BA and MA from Yale University summa cum laude in 1975 and a Ph.D. in Economics from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1980.
At sixteen, Rogoff dropped out of high school to concentrate on chess. At that time, he met Bobby Fischer, who was impressed by Rogoff's "self-assured style and his knowing exactly what he wanted over the chessboard." He won the United States Junior Championship in 1969 and spent the next several years living primarily in Europe and playing in tournaments there.&nbsp;
However, at eighteen, he made the decision to go to college and pursue a career in economics rather than become a professional player, although he continued to play and improve for several years afterward. Rogoff was awarded the IM title in 1974 and the GM title in 1978. He was 3rd in the World Junior Championship of 1971 and finished 2nd in the US Championship of 1975, which doubled as a Zonal competition, a half point behind Walter Browne; this result qualified him for the 1976 Interzonal at Biel, where he finished 13–15th.&nbsp;
In other tournaments, he drew for first at Norristown in 1973 and at Orense in 1976. He also draws individual games against former world champions Mikhail Tal and Tigran V. Petrosian. In 2012 he drew a blitz game with the world's highest-rated player Magnus Carlsen. Early in his career, Rogoff served as an economist at the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and at the Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve System.
Rogoff was the Charles and Marie Robertson Professor of International Affairs at Princeton University. In 2002, Rogoff was in the spotlight because of a dispute with Joseph Stiglitz, former World Bank chief economist, and 2001 Nobel Prize winner. After Stiglitz criticized the IMF in his book, Globalization, and Its Discontents, Rogoff replied in an open letter. He is also a regular contributor to Project Syndicate since 2002.
Fellow economist Alan Blinder credits both Rogoff and Carmen Reinhart with describing highly relevant aspects of the 2008 financial institution near-meltdown and resulting serious recession. In a normal recession such as 1991 or 2000, the Keynesian tools of tax cuts, infrastructure spending (fiscal stimulus), and lowered interest rates (monetary stimulus) will usually right the economic ship in a matter of months and lead to recovery and economic expansion.&nbsp;
Even the serious recession of 1982, which Blinder states "was called the Great Recession in its day," fits comfortably within this category of a normal recession which will respond to the standard tools. By contrast, the 2008 near-meltdown destroyed parts of the financial system and left other parts reeling and in serious need of de-leveraging. Large amounts of governmental, household, corporate, and financial institution debt were left in its wake. And because of this debt, the normal tools of tax cuts and increased infrastructure spending were somewhat less available and/or politically difficult to achieve.&nbsp;
(Fiscal policy sometimes became pro-cyclical, which it was in some European countries under austerity policies.) In the United States, economist Paul Krugman argued that even the combination of the Oct. 2008 bailout plus the Feb. 2009 bailout was not big enough. However, Blinder states that they were large compared to previous bailouts. And, since interest rates were already near zero, the standard monetary tool of lowering rates would not provide much help.
Recovery from what Blinder terms a Reinhart-Rogoff recession may require debt forgiveness, either directly or implicitly, through encouraging somewhat higher-than-normal rates of inflation. "Not your father’s recovery policies," writes Blinder.
During the 2010 United Kingdom general election, Rogoff contributed to an open letter to The Sunday Times endorsing the Conservative Party and Shadow Chancellor of the Exchequer George Osborne's demands for greater austerity during the European debt crisis.

Ben Bernanke began a second term as chairman of the Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve System in February 2010. He originally took office as chairman in February 2006, when he also began a fourteen-year term as a member of the Board of Governors. Bernanke was born in Augusta, Georgia, and grew up in Dillon, South Carolina. He received a bachelor’s degree in economics in 1975 from Harvard University (summa cum laude) and a doctorate in economics in 1979 from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
Bernanke was an assistant professor of economics at the Graduate School of Business at Stanford University from 1979 to 1983 and an associate professor of economics there from 1983 to 1985. His teaching career also included serving as a visiting professor of economics at New York University (1993) and at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (1989–90).
Beginning in 1985, Bernanke was a professor of economics and public affairs at Princeton University. From 1994 to 1996, Bernanke was the Class of 1926 Professor of Economics and Public Affairs at the university and was then the Howard Harrison and Gabrielle Snyder Beck Professor of Economics and Public Affairs and chair of the Economics Department at the university from 1996 to 2002 before becoming a member of the Board of Governors.
Over the years, Bernanke has served the Federal Reserve System in several roles. William J. Bernstein (born 1948) is an American financial theorist and neurologist. His research is in the field of modern portfolio theory, and he has published books for individual investors who wish to manage their own equity portfolios. He lives in Portland, Oregon. His bestselling books include The Birth of Plenty and A Splendid Exchange.&nbsp;
Bernstein is a proponent of the equity or index allocation school of thought, believing that all equity selection strategies should be focused on allocating between asset classes rather than selecting individual stocks and bonds or from the timing of their sales. Bernstein's first book, The Intelligent Asset Allocator, makes this case in detail; his second book, The Four Pillars of Investing: Lessons for Building a Winning Portfolio (McGraw-Hill, 2002; ISBN 0-07-138529-0), is aimed at those less comfortable with statistical thought. It also puts asset-class returns into long-term historical perspective.
Bernstein is a proponent of modern portfolio theory, which stands in stark contrast to the view that skilled managers can succeed in picking particular investments that will outperform the market, whether through market timing, momentum investing, or finding assets whose future value has been underestimated by the market.
